Compute the Tax-Free Portion
of Your Federal Retirement Benefit

Because of significant tax law changes in 1986, we cannot provide you with specific help on the tax treatment of your benefits.

Beginning July 2, 1986, under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules, a portion of each payment was tax-free and the remainder was taxable. Special rules apply to how long you claim the tax-free benefit. You can find information about these rules in IRS Publication 721, Tax Guide to U.S. Civil Service Retirement Benefits on the IRS web site.
